The emerging battle against drugresistancedrug-resistant bacteria poses a huge threat to public health worldwide. That threat has lundloomed larger as the number of effective anti-bioticantibiotic drugs has windoweddwindled.  

J. Michael Conlon is a biochemist at the United Arab Emirates University. He says frogs'skinsfrogskin, which protestsanfebrienceforanprotectsamphibiansfrom, is coming to the rescue by providing a wealth of new injury and diseaseanti-bioticconpundsantibioticcompounds to fight drugresistencefounddrydrug-resistantfungi and bacteria.

" Frogs of necesitynecessity have to live in a warmmositure,moist environment thatwillreconduceitthat'sveryconducive to the growth of microorganismsmicro-organisms. They've been around for a long, long time, at least threehundredmillion300,000,000 years. So, it's not so surprising thatall,over the causecourse of evalutionevolution, they've developed defenses against these invading pathogens. " 

Conlon has identified germfigtinggerm-fighting chemicals from more than 200 frog species from around the world .Byby isolating peptidepeptides or strings of proteins that have the ability to kill bacteria infounddryandfungi.

He says the challenge is to get those agenceagents to work in humancehumans. " ProblemTheproblem is, though, that as well as ophyciantheyefficiently killing microorganismsmicro-organisms, they hadare to varyingvaryin degrees toxtictoxic to memailionsoilsmammaliancells. So it's not a great idea to acureinffectioncureinfection if you kill the patient toat the same time. " 

Conlon's laboritarylaboratory in the United Arab Emirates works with samples from frogs gathered collabrativelycollaboratively by sicentistsscientists in Japan, France and the United States.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate says the main concern is possible flooding.

" PrimaryTheprimary threat here is going to be stromsearch,westormsurge.We use troperforcewingshourtropicalforcewinds,however, as a benchmark to have an evacuation completed , because many of the overland arousedcloudrouteswillinclude high bridges and other things that troperforcetropicalforce gust would make it extremlyextremely dangerous. Earlier, heavy rains from Earl coastfloodlingcausedflooding in lowlinelow-lying areas of Antigua, and wingswinds ripped out trees and blew down powerlinespowerlines on the nearlynearby island of St. Martin. Officials in the U. S. Virgin Islands inand Puerto Rico saysaid they are working to restore electricity to more than 200,000 people who were affected by the storm.

Meanwhile, forecasters say residents of the eastern Caribbean should preparedprepare for possible impact from another stromstorm that has formed in the Atlantic. Tropical stormStorm Fiona is expected to reach parts of the area by WensdayWednesday.

Bill Reed of the National Hurricane Center says Fiona is not expected to come as close to land as Earl did.

Weather Officialofficials say Hurricane Earl was moving northward off the USU.S. coast, after skirting parts of the Easterneastern Caribbean this week.

Forecasters at the National HunricaneHurricane Center in Miami say therethey are closely watching the storm for signs that it will remain in open waters, or turn west and impact the USU.S. coastline. They say thatoutterfrangestheouterfringes of the catergoryCategory 4 storm are expected to reach the berariersbarrier islands of North Carolina by Friday.

National Hurricane Center directorDirector Bill Reed says the stromstorm should continue to produce very dangerous conditions in Atlantic waters as it moves north.

Emergency Officialofficials said theresidenceresidents in lowlinelow-lying coastal areas from North Carolina to Maine should be prepared for possible evacuations in the coming days. They say residents should monitor local weather officials, who may begin issuing strommorningsstormwarnings as Earl moves closer to the USU.S. mainland.
